Colebrook Academy Wins participation award for New Hampshire!

Congratulations to The Abbey Group’s Food Service Manager Steven Learned and his efforts in helping to  facilitate the largest increase in participation for a school breakfast participation in New Hampshire from quarter 3 to quarter 4 of the ‘14/’15 school year (category: small high school). The New Hampshire Department of Education has been distributing certificates to recognize such achievements.

Pantry Food Cooking with a Twist – The Abbey Group Makes the News!

We are so excited to share another cooking segment hosted by our own Middlebury Chef Bill Greene which aired on December 4th on ABC22.

Chef Bill prepared a few simple items using ingredients found at the local food pantry to go in conjunction with the efforts to promote the Holiday Chittenden County Can Drive.

Abbey Group’s Capitol Chef Ray Wood Makes the News!

A big congratulations to State Capitol Chef Ray Wood for being presented with the Spirit of ADA Award from the Governor’s Committee on the Employment of People with Disabilities.

“This award is presented to individuals and businesses who reflect the spirit of the american with disabilities act in employment practices, including accessibility, recruiting, hiring, accommodating and support of  a persons with disability as an overall employment strategy.

Executive Chef Ray Wood is an employer who as a way of making his employees feel truly valued. while teaching culinary work skills, he also teaches skills that transfer into one’s personal life, going above and beyond to help employees reach their own full potential. when one individual with a disability was seeking a job, Ray Wood offered a tour of the kitchen and in informational interview. this led to a two week work experience and, ultimately, a competitive employment position. Ray Wood demonstrates outstanding respect for the individual, and the willingness, patience, and gentle direction needed to give each employee the opportunity to succeed.”

Ray has been working with us at The Capitol Food Court for over ten years.

Q: How long have you been working in school kitchens?
A:  I have been cooking for students for 8 1/2 years

Q: What is your favorite kitchen gadget for processing local food?
A:  A zester!

Q: What is your favorite vegetable?
A: It’s hard to narrow down so I have to go with Spinach, garlic and onions.

Q: On average how many meals do you produce per day?
A: We serve about 360 a day.

Q: What is your favorite part of your job?
A: My favorite part of my job has to be the appreciation I get from the students and staff at Leland and Gray and the support The Abbey Group has given me to put out creative, healthy food!

Q: Anything else you’d like us to know about your program?
A: I love working for The Abbey Group, they are so passionate about quality and purchasing local. Also I am excited to start using the produce coming from the Leland and Gray Garden!
